Wedge Mountain Hike in Whistler: Full Description Difficulty: Difficult Distance: 15.4Km Elevation Gain: 1,503m Highest Elevation: 1,977m Average Gradient: 21.43% Time Needed: – Slow: 8 – 10 Hours – Moderate: 6 Effort The Wedge Mountain hike in Whistler is a challenging yet incredibly rewarding adventure. This trail offers an immersive experience into the rugged beauty of the Garibaldi Provincial Park, leading hikers to the breathtaking Wedgemount Lake. Trailhead and Initial Ascent: Your journey begins at the Wedgemount Lake Trailhead. The initial portion of the trail is steep and forested, offering a vigorous workout right from the start. As you ascend, you’ll pass through a dense canopy of towering trees, with the forest floor carpeted in lush green moss and ferns. The steady climb will have you crossing several small streams and navigating rocky terrain. Midway Ascent: Approximately halfway up, the forest begins to thin, providing glimpses of the surrounding mountains. You’ll encounter several switchbacks that make the steep incline more manageable. As you climb higher, the sounds of the forest are replaced by the distant roar of the Wedgemount Glacier melting into streams below. Boulder Field and Final Ascent: Continuing upward, the trail leads you to a challenging boulder field. This section requires careful footing as you navigate the rocky terrain. The landscape becomes increasingly alpine, with fewer trees and more exposed rock. The effort is well worth it as you approach the final ascent to Wedgemount Lake. Arrival at Wedgemount Lake: Upon reaching the top, you are greeted with the stunning sight of Wedgemount Lake, a brilliant turquoise glacial lake nestled among the towering peaks of the Coast Mountains. The color of the lake, caused by glacial silt, is mesmerizing and provides a perfect backdrop for photos. Exploration and Swimming: After taking in the breathtaking views, you can explore the area around the lake. There are several spots along the shoreline perfect for setting up a picnic or simply relaxing. For the adventurous, a refreshing swim in the glacial waters is an exhilarating experience. The cold, clear water is invigorating and offers a unique way to connect with the pristine natural environment.
